Sometimes, we'll lose friends, we'll hurt people, we'll say things we don't mean, we'll do things we regret. But that will just always be a side affect of growing up. You just mustn't let that dictate your life.

I like your deep insight into the meaning, but I also looked at it from a bit of a different perspective: the silly, everyday things we do, like getting dressed up for Halloween. There's no point in going halfway when we do these kind of funny things, otherwise there's no point in doing them at all!
